Gap Year Guidance Program

Gap Year Student

Taking a gap year between high school and college can be a wonderful opportunity to explore your interests and develop your future goals. We will help you design a meaningful gap or post-graduate (PG) year that will prepare you to succeed in college and beyond.

The Gap Year Guidance Program includes:

  • Introductory Call: After registration, a call to review main areas of interest and gap year goals
  • Personalized Gap Year Report: A detailed gap year plan based on an analysis of your interests, strengths, academic record, and extracurricular experiences
  • One-hour Phone Consultation with our Gap Year Specialist to discuss your Personalized Gap Year Report and review next steps
  • 3 hours of Writing Guidance and editing via phone and/or email with our Gap Year Specialist to craft a compelling gap year narrative, letters to colleges, gap year program application essays, and more
  • Copy of Top Tier Admissions’ Gap Year e-Guide

* This program must be used within 6 months from the date of purchase.

There are two types of gap years, and we help with both:

  1. Deferred enrollment: After being admitted to a college or university, many students ask for permission to postpone their start date for a year. We advise them to create a gap year that will convince the admissions committee to grant their request.
  2. Post-graduate (PG) year: Many students choose to wait to apply to college until after their high school graduation. We encourage them to strategically plan a gap year that will improve their chances of admission.

High Praise From Past Clients:

"I know first hand how you run your business.  Off the charts ethical! We look forward to continuing our relationship with Top Tier's Application Boot Camp."
-Parent of Application Boot Camp (Dartmouth) students
"I'm just so deeply grateful for everything that you and M have done for me... for always encouraging me, for giving me the tools to take my application to the next level, and for patiently explaining admissions strategies to me. I also can't even begin to thank you for all the time you spent on the phone rallying me when my confidence was shaken or I felt like everything I had worked for was going to fall apart because of the math section of the SAT. Having you as a coach was the best part of this insane process and my mom and I have no doubt that I wouldn't be going to Columbia if it weren't for your help. I'm excited about Columbia and about the scholarship (even though I'm not really sure what being a 'John Jay scholar' means) and am taking the time to reflect on what it is I want to do with my life. Thank you again, so very much!" –B.S., Private Counseling student
"Thank you both for all your efforts with T. We know she can now handle college and beyond. We’ve noticed such growth in her confidence and abilities over the four years. Thank you!" –L.M., Private Counseling parent
"M, thanks so much for the kind words. Thank you also for all of your help over the past four years. Your realism and sound advice pushed me far beyond what I thought I was capable of, and I definitely wouldn't have made it this far otherwise! I'll keep you posted on what I'm doing at UChicago (I can't wait to get started!)" –B.N., Private Counseling student, U Chicago
"Such good news… P got into Columbia and Duke! Such great news! She also received the Regents Scholarship at UC Berkeley! She could not have gotten these without your help! Thank you!!" –G.T., parent of Private Counseling student
"Thanks a million for all your guidance and support! We are forever grateful!" T.R., Private Counseling parent, Princeton
Dear K, R felt very positive about his session with you. I haven’t seen him this upbeat about his prospects for the math section in a long time (if ever!).  We’d like to have you continue with him weekly if possible, until the March SAT, and we can re-evaluate as necessary after that. Thank you! –G.F., SAT tutoring parent
"I wanted to send you a note to thank you for all the help you have given to P on her college essays. You have helped her so much within such a short period of time. I wish we had found you earlier. We wasted so much time and effort since the summer. I have a 9th grader and I know who to turn to for help now. Thank you, J! I will be in touch." –L.K., Essay Guidance Program parent
"L, I CANT BELIEVE IT! We are done with all of the essays! It is my birthday today and I couldn’t have gotten a better birthday present. Thank you so much for responding soooo quickly and helping me in this process. I have learned a lot from you and you are an excellent and kind teacher. I don't think anyone else on this planet could have done a better job than you did. Thanks again!" –F.H., Essay Guidance Program student
"As we are nearing the end of this application process, only Colgate and Michigan applications left, I can not thank you enough for all of your assistance, advice and support. I would like to highlight the support piece as I think both P and I derived significant comfort from having an outside, very experienced advisor to turn to. Your edits and advice have been invaluable. I can not tell you how happy P was each time she saw an email from you that said 'if you accept these edits, the essay is ready to go.' Immediately I would hear about it!!From a very depressed state, with your help, P is almost through a very long, daunting process, and is feeling much better. Although it’s not over yet…. a million thanks.I hope you will still be advising when my son R gets to this process (he’s in 10th grade now). Thank you again!" –N.M., Essay Guidance Program parent
"H’s expertise and ability to improve my writing was so beneficial! She elevated my essays and helped bring out my own creativity and voice. H went above and beyond to be responsive and helpful. She always responded in a timely manner, and her feedback was generous and constructive. I thought this program was great; I wasn't able to attend the regular Boot Camp and found this to be an excellent alternative that worked with my schedule. I highly recommend Top Tier Admissions! The work I did with H definitely elevated my essays beyond what I would've been capable of on my own. Knowing I had an expert there to help, and wasn't doing this on my own, also greatly reduced my stress levels. I will be forever grateful to H for all of her assistance. It was truly a pleasure working with her, and you're lucky to have someone with her level of expertise on your staff. Thank you for matching me with her." -- P.C., Essay Guidance Program student, Duke
"E, I recently received my decisions for UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Harvard, and I was accepted to all three schools!! Thank you so much for your help last winter; you not only guided me through my applications but also made things much less stressful!" –P.T., Essay Guidance Program student
"L, S is planning to join USC for Aerospace Engineering! I am personally very happy for her and want to thank you once again for all your help and support. It was simply invaluable. Wishing you the very best." –N.B., parent of Essay Guidance Program student, USC
P has heard from two schools, Sewanee and Davidson. She got into both!  We expected a Sewanee acceptance after her visit, but it is a comfort to know she got in.  Davidson was a total unknown. But she got in, to a school with a 15% or so transfer acceptance rate. That is just awesome. I don't know if she ends up there, but it is really a great shot of confidence and happiness after a rather dismal twelve months. Thank you for your advice, thoughts and words through all of this.I tend to think this validates the essays. At least one very selective school liked what she wrote and liked her total package. That pleases me but also makes me hopeful for news to come. At any rate, I thought you would like to know, and to express my thanks for all of your time, thoughts and energy. –M.K., parent, Transfer Essay Guidance Program
"Thank you so much for your help and guidance. I wouldn't have been able to do it without you and the Top Tier Admissions Team! I'm still in between UPenn and Georgetown, but I will make sure to visit both." –S.I., Application Boot Camp student
"Clearly, Application Bootcamp and Top Tier took a lot of anxiety out of the whole situation. Our children know a number of kids who did not get into their top choice ED school, only to be devastated and stressed as they are without a plan for ED II and regular decision and have not worked on a range of essays for other schools. So while F & J’s EA-only strategy is not for everyone but made sense for them since they did not have a clear lead school when they were applying, being prepared made all the difference. The help Bootcamp provided in honing their voice and words into essays that reflect their intent was fantastic. In the end, it is all about having choices they are happy with, and I am happy to say they both have those now!"–F.A., parent of Application Boot Camp students
"E., I just wanted to let you know that I got into Barnard Early Decision! Thank you for everything you have done!!! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate everything you did for me! Thank You!!" - H.L., Personal Boot Camp student

I got into UPenn, Cornell, Barnard, Wellesley, Wesleyan, Tufts, University of Michigan, and Wake Forest, and am waiting to hear from Georgetown; I think I'm leaning towards UPenn. Thank  you so much for all your guidance; I don't think I could have done it without your help!" --I.R., Application Boot Camp student
"Thank you to you and Yvonne for the help over the years - I’m very thankful for the guidance you provided me with and know that without it, the college process would’ve been much more difficult and unmanageable for me!" –O.S., Private Counseling student
"On top of Yale, I ended up getting into Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton, and am planning on attending the visit days for them in order to make my decision! Thank you both so much for your advice, your support, and all the continuous revising; it made all the difference!" --M.L., Private Counseling student

"I wanted to let you know that my journey through the college application process has officially come to an end. I was accepted to Duke in the ED round! I can't thank you enough for all your guidance and support in the process. It has truly been a privilege working with you. The feedback you gave me was so generous and helped me to elevate my essays beyond what I thought was possible. Ironically, in the end, all I needed was my personal statement and my 150-word 'why' for Duke, but I'm so glad I was prepared for the regular decision round. Thank you again for everything!" – S.Y., Essay Guidance Program student
